Our Week: October 5th - October 11th

Here are a few snapshots from our week...

Colton:

Here is a video of Colton "driving" his cucumber around his tray...made me laugh!  He also learned his first 4-syllable word: "helicopter".

I think Colton is going to be a great singer just like his daddy!  He started matching pitch/tone and rhythm this week.  Here Daddy and Colton are singing a favorite Spanish song about a hippo while they color:

Here is a little video of Colton reading his new "hockey" book.  We took this video for Uncle Eric who LOVES hockey.

Here is a little video of Colton practicing his shapes (big sister was a good helper!)

This boy loves all kinds of balls.  Here is is collecting and pushing them around in a stroller.

Summer:

She loves riding this trike all over!

Preschool this week:

Here is a little video of Summer playing the "subtraction game".  Really its just made up using things we had around the house, but she loves it and requests to play it!

We practiced writing numbers...

Writing her name....(she can do M's by herself now!)

LOVING the white board and marker ;)

tracing lowercase letters

practicing what letter items start with (she is really good at this part)

And her favorite...learning how to use scissors.  Daddy got to be "teacher" for this lesson.  To say Summer was excited would be an understatement!

Outing to Pahl's Market:

Today we jogged over to Pahl's Market, only few miles away, to meet up with some friends and enjoy fall fun!  The highlight was the "corn pit".  Literally a massive "bin" filled with corn.  Even we mom's had fun!

Summer "swimming" in corn with friends Adelyn and Adry

1, 2, 3 JUMP!

All the kids had fun running around in the hay maze and looking for the "hidden pumpkins" for a looooong time!

I'm off to a women's retreat with 60 other amazing gals this weekend and Daddy has the weekend with the kiddos!  I know I will miss them a bunch, but I am excited to spend time growing closer to the Lord as well as for Daddy to have some fun kiddo time.  :)

What a difference paint can make....

So I started my "little" kitchen painting project the week before Labor Day, thinking, "I have two weeks off of tutoring...let's get a little project done....".  Well, projects always take longer than you think, and this one is no exception!  I just packed away the final paint brush, and MY does it feel good!  So let me fill you in on my project...

GOALS
Goal 1: Paint kitchen cabinets white (inside and out) to create a cleaner, brighter, newer look in the kitchen.

Inside of drawers and cabinets were icky 1970 wood; outside was light brown

Goal 2: Remove the scalloping on the top of cabinets

Original Scalloped Top

Goal 3: Remove chair rail in kitchen and dining room (was a painted, narrow, board hung on the wall around the kitchen and dining room with no detailing) and paint walls one color to simplify look.

PROCESS

1) Label all cabinet doors with post-it note numbers and make a key to know which doors go back on which cabinet.  Remove all hardware, hinges, and doors from cabinets.  Colton loved helping with the power screwdriver and Summer organized my hardware and screws for me!

2) Sand all cabinets and doors, front and back, with power sander. Wipe down all doors with water.  (Summer helped me wipe the cabinets down).  This step also required a ton of cleaning the kitchen after sanding the inside part, since we still had to live, eat, and cook in the areas that I sanded.

This was my sanding station for the cabinet doors to keep the dust mostly outside.  I did have to sand the actual cabinets inside the kitchen which did generate dust!

3) Steal hubby's garage stall for a month.  Lay cabinet doors on floor along with their "numbers".  Ready for painting.

4) Remove items from half the cabinets (I didn't have space to empty all of them at the same time!).  UG!  It was definitely hard to live like this for quite a few days!

5) Prime, Prime, Prime, Paint, Paint, Paint.  Yes, I probably did 6 coats on everything!   The doors (out in the garage) took a lot of time because I had to wait until the front dried before I could flip and do the back.

6) Organize and replace items, and repeat steps 4 and 5 for the other half of the kitchen.  This organizing step wasn't planned, but did feel good.  After taking everything I owned out of the cabinets, I realized there were a lot of things I didn't use or need.  Also, because I organized my kitchen when we moved in, pre-kids, all the kids' stuff was thrown in "where it fit" instead of in an organized manner.  After organizing, I actually feel like I have a lot more cabinet space, AND the insides feel SO much cleaner!

7) Re-attach hinges and hardware, and replace doors.

8) Remove chair rail.
FYI: it is a mistake to peel paint that is peeling off from under the chair rail....it brought the top layer of drywall with it :(  Live and learn!

9) Mud. I did more coats than I can count of mudding in the kitchen and dining room where the chair rail was to smooth the wall so I could paint it (and to cover the above section of drywall)  It was my first experience mudding.  I liked parts of it...it was actually quite therapeutic, like frosting a cake with thick frosting...it was a pretty fun texture to work with!  I also liked that it washed off everything with just water (unlike paint) if you got it someplace you shouldn't.  The hardest part of mudding is that you have to take 24 hours for it to dry in between coats, and you have to do a lot of coats.  The other hard part is that you have to sand in between coats, and the particles of drywall go EVERYWHERE making a fine dusty mist over every surface in the kitchen and dining room.  Because we cooked/ate/tutored/lived in this space daily I spent as much time deep cleaning the kitchen as I did mudding.  Whew.  SO glad to be done with this step!!

10) Paint walls brown.

11) Paint window and door trim white.  Several coats on each.

12) Ask my handsome, talented, hubby to rewire the outlets so I could put a clean white light switches and plug-in's in place of the off white ones that had previous paint splotches on them.  Thanks, honey :-).

OUTCOME

I have a few more decorative details I'll be looking to do on the walls, etc, but the hard labor and messy part is DONE!  It's pretty fun to see what a few gallons of paint (and a lot of man-hours) can do to transform a space!

This Week: September 28th - October 3

Wow!  It's Friday already.  I used to be better about blogging more often, but my goal now is to combine the week's happening in one post at the end of the week.  I have two goals as a blogger.  First, it is how I keep a photo album/scrapbook/journal for our family so that we can look back (in an organized fashion) and remember what the kids looked like/sounded like/enjoyed doing/etc.  Secondly, we have so many out of town family members that it is a great way for us to stay connected.

Anyway, on to a few snapshots from this week....

Big Slide
At the beginning of the week we spent a lot of time at the park.  Gorgeous, sunny, summer-y feeling days!  I think it is so good for the kids to get exercise daily, and both kids climb and run all over at the park.  This week marked a "first" for both kids.  Colton decided he was ready to go down the "big" slide all by himself (he is my adventurous one).  He loved it!  Summer (my cautious one) has refused to go down this slide ever since I can remember, but suddenly, after Colton did it, Summer came whizzing down all by herself!  (A little sibling competition?!?)  Now that the fear of the "big" slide is gone, that is practically all they did at the park this week!

Performance
Summer is my little performer.  She will turn anything into a stage and sing her little heart out.  She loves when everyone watches!  Colton will do anything his big sister does, so he climbed up on her "stage" at the park and sang right along with her.  Hilarious.  Here is a little video:

BSF
Summer is loving her BSF (Bible Study Fellowship) class, and her teachers Ms. Carol and Ms. Roxy.  One of my favorite parts is that I get a handout in my class about what she is learning in her class, specifically what Scripture she has read (the read to the kids right out of the "big" Bible.  I then read the same passage later with her at home so we could discuss it together.  When I pick her up, they have a whiteboard outside the room that tells what they learned and what songs they sang. They also gave us parents a song packet with words and music to all the songs they sing.  So Summer and I had fun playing the piano and singing her BSF songs!  (We also snuck in a mini music lesson about how the keys on the piano have letter names :) )

Tot School/Preschool
Right now, we are still practicing our shapes and colors with Colton.  We did his shape puzzle this week and he is starting to identify shapes outside of his shape puzzle.  We also talk about colors all the time-- what color his water bottle is, his plate is, his cup is, his Popsicle is, his shirt is, etc.  We also are talking about the letters in his name.  Summer has been teaching Colton his letters and asking him to repeat them after she says the name, and he does!  Little teacher Summer.  Colton is different from Summer at this age in that Summer LOVED to do flashcards, read books, do puzzles, and learn, learn, learn from each of these.  Colton loves to move!  So we do a lot of action learning.  I have a few ideas up my sleeve that I am excited to try with him next week (we didn't get to it this week) but we did make a masking tape road for him to drive his cars on, and some of the roads just happened to spell his name ;).

This week with Summer we focused on reading and writing, with a little math thrown in for fun!  She now has mastered all her "at" words (she can read all of them quite quickly now), and so we moved onto "ad" words.  We also tried a new game where we laid all her words on the table, I would say a word, and she would find it.
Summer wanted to make flashcards for me, so I thought up words I that would be easy for her to make either because they were filled with letters she was good at, or because they were words that interested her.  She wrote HI, LITTLE, LOVE, and ZOO.  Then she had me fun making me "sound" them out :-).

For math, she is loving matching worksheets like this one, where she counts the candy and connects it to the correct number.  We did several of these.

For the first time this week, she put "legs" on her smiley faces.  Her artistic talent has now officially surpassed mine ;).  Here is her picture, entitled, "Mommy and Baby"

(The Mommy is the big face with the orange legs, and the baby is the small face by the big face's nose)

In the Kitchen
It is mutual--both Summer and I enjoy working together in the kitchen.  This week we made a dessert and she made her first PBJ "almost" by herself.  She was pretty excited!

I have been trying a bunch of new recipes in the past few months or so since I discovered how to utilize the combination of Pinterest and my recently acquired smart phone.  Pinterest is my favorite cooking tool because it is so easy to use (especially with kids!).  I search through all the recipes on my phone when I get random moments throughout the week, pin my favorites to my board, and then right before I go shopping all of the recipes are right in the same place (with no cutting, recopying, etc involved) so it is really easy to make my shopping list while the kids are eating breakfast.

Here are of our favorites from the past couple of weeks....

Crockpot Cheesy Chicken and Rice
Crockpot No Boil Manicotti
Crockpot Cheese Tortellini
Crispy Chicken Roll-Ups
Baked Parmesan Garlic Chicken
Chicken Roll-ups
Ginger Veggie Stir Fry
Pan-Roasted Chicken with Lemon-Garlic Green Beans
Pizza Bites
Chinese Beef and Broccoli

Tonight we are having a SUPER easy crockpot soup-: can of rotel, can of corn, can of black beans (drained & rinsed), 2 frozen chicken breasts, 8 oz cream cheese, 1 packet dry ranch dressing, 1 tablespoon cumin, 1 teaspoon onion powder, 1 teaspoon chili powder. Put all ingredients in crock pot and cook 6-8 hours. Shred chicken, and enjoy!  Perfect for a cold, rainy, fall day!

Looking forward to a Friday night "in" tonight. :)
